Backfire?

I have a '00 Max with shimmed (.027) needles and K&N filter.  Every once in
a while just off idle when taking off I get a small backfire through the
carbs.  I had this problem before the mods when the bike was 100% stock and
was told the shims would get rid of this little "sneeze" it had.  But I
still have it.  Any other suggestions?  TIA  -Don Mason
