Chris,
I don't know why your dealer might have changed your pipes ... but
this is interesting because HLSM shows the current pipe part numbers
as 1UT-14710 - XX, (XX=12 for chrome and 21 for black). I suppose this
must be a different number than that printed on the outside of the
left can. Mine is a '93 and it has EPA 80db conformance stamped on it
and indicates a model/part number of 1U1-1198 ... so I suppose this
must not be the real part number but I doubt if the 85' models had the
80db compliance stamp. You should be able to check the stamping on
your left can to see what it says about conformance. You can't see it
from the outside without drilling holes or cutting the muffler apart
but the new ones have 8, 1/2 inch holes, (venting incoming exhaust),
at the front of the can, (I used to think there were 5 but took a
better look), ... the whole works is floating in a perforated basket,
(you might be able to see the edge of the welds of four of the holes
looking straight down the main baffle tube. Someone posted a while
back and they apparently had a real set of 85' exhaust cans because
they had just a round obstruction in the middle that was easily
knocked out ... after doing so they said they could look straight
though the muffler. These pipes are as neat as they are heavy ... the
8 3/4 x 1 1/4 exit baffle free floats and the recess at the exit end
of the baffle is attached to is 1/2 inch deep and 2 inches in diameter
..... hmmmmm ...
