One thing to consider with this......Hot exhaust travels faster than cooler
exhaust. Just as someone mentioned that the 18" Hindle can produced more power
may be a result of system tuned length. Notice that equal length headers are
typically used? This is because engines all have an optimum exhaust length to
produce peak horsepower and the exhaust temperature has a lot to do with the
length of the headers. Exhaust builders make every attempt to build the system
to it's ideal length. Wrapping the exhaust to retain heat may actually lose
horsepower on a well designed system or move it closer to ideal depending on
how it was originally made.
For years I built championship watercraft by variable tuning the pipe with
metered water injection to control and take advantage of the temp of the
exhaust and impulses. Now they have electronic devices to do it. Yes two
strokes are more critical on exhaust tuning but it does have a (lesser) effect
on a 4-cycle engine as well
