I would offer that pure back pressure in itself is not good. The inherent
increased pressure that comes from having optimum sized header pipes that
produce the right amount of exhaust velocity based on port flow, cam timing
etc is good.  The 18" can versus the 16" increase may be the result of
improved negative wave tuning and resulting scavenging effect rather than
increased pressure.
