Vern,
No ... you do not ... that is only for normal people .. and does not
apply to a Vmax owner ... Autometer does have "motorcycle" specific
tachometers but they are kind of duds ... theirs come in 8K, 10K and
14K versions and are limited when compared to the capabilities of the
ones designated for automobiles ... especially the Pro-Comp line. Also
in the auto selection you will find a bunch of 11K units. These tachs
will work in the 4 cylinder mode .. where a "normal", (not any more
really), single coil 4 cycle, 4 cylinder engine would produce 2 pulses
per revolution.

Obviously, if you connect the tach to "one" Vmax coil you are only
going to get one pulse per revolution, (if we weren't doing waste
spark we would only get one every other revolution), and read half of
what you are supposed to ... even using the 4 cylinder setting .....
sooooooooooooo ... we just fix that. You connect two diodes ... one
each to a coil, (use the front pair or the rear pair ... as they don't
fire at the same time), and connect up them up just like you were
doing the rev limiter routine, (diodes pointing towards the coil), and
feed the loose ends to the tach, (which must be set for 4 cycle if
applicable and 4 cylinder). Now we will get two pluses per revolution,
(one every 180 degrees), and if you keep the tach covered until it is
mounted it will never know it is on a motorcycle ... If the rev
limiter in the tach, (assuming you get one that is equipped), is
designed to ground it's feed then use all four diodes, (like the
standard rev-limiter diagram). If it gives you a ground ... then
connect that to the orange pickup sensor lead, (cause you have a late
model ignition).

Of course .. if you are going to put the speedometer on the handlebar
.. then I am sure you can find a matching unit from Autometer as well
.......... and can go mechanical or electronic .... This should make a
really neat installation ... as they have a wide selection of cups ...
the units would match ... etc ....... cool !!
