Paul - you're right about the sound being the V-Boost. When powered up, it
closes the butterflies between the carbs, opening them after 6K rpm.
My '85 Max's V-Boost has different sounds too depending on how warm/cold the
motor is. Sometimes there's a clicking that continues for at least 5
seconds...
I've never had it checked professionally, or by any of the list gurus, but
it's operated this way since I bought the bike. Even after I R&R'd the
motor, it sounded the same. I checked all operation when reassembling it,
so I really can't explain the different noises!
I don't think it affects my V-Boost operation in any way....but you may have
a different problem.

It's possible your linkage has bound up somehow. Was your bike stored
indoors all winter? I used to live in Chicago, and the moisture there
during the spring/fall is hard on exposed parts, like cables & linkages,
even in a garage. (luckily my dad had a drive-in basement heated to 68*F!)
Good luck,

I've got a 1999 Max that I picked up at the end of last year. when I
turn on the ignition there's a noise from what I assume is the V-Boost
unit. Kind of a stepper motor straining against a fixed stop kind a
thing. After the winter lay-up, I noticed the noise seems either louder
and longer or my memory is bad. The question is, is this normal or
should I get it back to Yamaha? It seems to make more noise when its
cold. On a warm restart there is little or no noise.
