Paul,
You always hear the Vboost when you turn on the ignition key ... but
the clicking that sounds like something stuck is the fuel pump. The
number of clicks you hear will depend on how empty the fuel bowls are.
The clicking is the operation of a "cut off" contact arrangement in
the base of the fuel pump that starts and stops the pump depending on
the amount of flow resistance encountered. Once the fuel bowls are
full the clicks cease ... that is why you don't really hear it that
much on a restart etc ... as the fuel bowls are still almost
completely full. If you sit long enough ... this level will erode and
it simply has to run more to fill them back up. I have a Royal Star
with a similar pump arrangement ... but is fed from an overhead gas
tank ... the overhead gas tank has an on-off valve ... and if the bike
is started without opening the valve .. the pump will go crazy as it
is unable to fill the bowls and create flow resistance sufficient to
shut itself off. Join the VMOA and let you bike socialize with some of
the other local Vmaxes ... this is a great place to check this type of
stuff out and talk to other owners.
