My 85 V-max has an electrical problem. Only the #3 cylinder is firing and
the bike will no longer run. Every connection on the bike has been
thoroughly cleaned with a brass brush, contact fluid and has dielectric
grease in it. The problem has occasionally occurred over the past 6 months
after riding about half an hour but could be fixed by turning the bike off
then back on or letting the bike sit and cool down (the bike runs very cool).
I have checked the ignition coils, charging system and battery all of which
are fine. I checked the pickup coils at the TCI unit and at the main lead
under the seat and found that 3 were out of spec. 1 @120, 3 @ +-240 ohms. I
also switched the ignition coil connection from cylinder number 3 to cylinder
number 1 which would then fire. I ordered a new pickup coil assembly today
but was told by my local shop that 9 times out of 10 the TCI was the problem.
They said the only time they had seen a bad pickup was when a dog had chewed
the leads. Any help would be appreciated. Paul VMOA#1141
