Believe me, I went through everything myself as well, replacing my battery and
regulator.  Problems continued (and recure yearly) unless I unplug and clean
the connector plugs between the regulator and stator.  Also the mounting
points for the frame piece the rugulator mounts to, they corrode.  Mine ('91)
has the extra ground wire from regulator bolt to connector to frame, but I
STILL had this same problem.  Some suggest ditching the connector and just
soldering these 4 wires (3 + 1).  Not a bad idea, although I haven't done this
yet.  It REALLY is this connector that causes problems with Max's marginal
charging capacity system.
