Duke,
 I got the same problem on my 92' Max and my mechanic guy said that this is
very common on the Max and said that there is a voltage loss
of a ~1 volt in the wiring and he suggested to replace the wiring harness
or he was willing to run an additional wire to by pass the harness I'm not
sure which wire that was but I haven't done it yet I'm charging my battery
once a month or so .I hope this helps
