My 2 cents worth.
Seems to me that if the first thing you noticed was that the console lights
went out then it doesn't seem likely that it's a mechanical failure unless
it's just a starter clutch seizing. I can see where that could have an
effect on the console lights but even so it seems unlikely they would
suddenly go completely dead. If a timing chain were to break then it will
definitely seize the motor right now, but you'd still have console lights.
Also, if you're turning the motor from the 32mm nut on the flywheel side be
sure you're turning the correct direction. It doesn't like to turn
backwards.
