James,
I think your original battery was really down ... I am surprised you
got started in the first place ... I don't think you have seized your
engine but it certainly sounds like the starter etc is jammed/frozen
... or is just making it's usual death type sounds when not getting
enough juice. When my battery was down ... the lights dimmed too ..
and the starter sounded like it was jammed against an immovable object
after only one or two turns ...... What is the "no load" voltage on
your new battery now ?? If your new battery wasn't charged
sufficiently it really wouldn't be able to put up with too much abuse
.. you can get some pretty terrible sounds from the starter as it
decides it is not turning anymore ... I can't turn the wheel in 5th
or 1st either ... you get a running start and you might get somewhere
..........
You can pull the side cover off ... and get a hold of a 32 mm socket
or a big crescent wrench so that you can turn the crank by hand ...
there might be something going on with the starter clutch gears .. etc
...... if so ... you have to get in there anyhow ... but I really
don't think so .... make sure you have your new battery charged up
really good and try it again ... the new battery should charge on low
current ... < 1.5 amps but even better at .75 amps ... usually takes
several hours ......... let it charge until it gets into the 16 volt
range or quits making forward progress voltage wise ... (make sure you
at least get into the 15s)... I would be surprised if you don't start
right up with a fully charged battery ....... IMHO ...
