Ray,
The advantages are that the kick stand is too long too ... ;>o ....
Actually, you can still use the center stand. At one time I was
fooling around with Virago shocks, (just to see what 11 3/4 inches
looked like), and put the bike up on the center stand to change back
to the Vmax shocks ... Granted it is a little more difficult with
shorter shocks but you just have to make sure you are doing it
correctly in the first place .... You don't really want to try to roll
on to the stand ... you will probably drop the bike because when you
stamp on the stand and it doesn't catch you are in a poor position to
hang on to all that weight. Honest .. I read this somewhere .. (don't
ask me where), and have been doing it this way ever since ... and
never have a problem putting any bike on it's stand ......

First off ... make sure you are wearing "hard" soled shoes/boots.

Second ... all bikes that have a center stand have a grab handle; on
the Vmax it is the seat rail and you should grab right behind the top
shock mount.

Third ... push down on the center stand "pedal" with your foot ...
just enough so that the bike will stand up straight on both stand
legs, (it will try to do this automatically as you push down ... but
just get it in this position first). You could actually remove your
hands at this point because the legs of the stand are holding the bike
up.

Forth .. with you foot ... put all your weight on the pedal ..
"pushing straight down" .. if you end up with all your body weight on
the pedal that is just fine ... the bike isn't going anywhere because
it is being balanced by the two stand legs. While you are doing this
.. pull straight up on the grab handle ..........

I guarantee you the bike will pop right up on the stand .... If you
are not used to doing it this way .. try it ... it is a lot easier
than it sounds. Any attempts to move the bike in any direction other
than straight up in the air is going to get you floor time. If you are
riding without a stand but still have mounting tabs .. then put the
bolts in when you want to use the stand ... and cut the pedal off of
the "stand" with a hacksaw. A 3/4 ID piece of pipe will slide right
over the pedal leg .... Now ... all you have to do is apply mild
pressure on your 3 foot pedal extension, (with a nice "T" handle on
it), then move away and push firmly down on the extension ... The bike
will pop right up on the stand for service ...... remove the "T"
handle extension and roll the bike off when you are done. IMHO as
always.
