Mike,
If you take the el-largo c-clip off the end of the hub it will pull
right out of the wheel. If you put a shim between the hub and the
wheel you would have no choice other than to leave the c-clip off.
Sooooooooo ... lets say you do that ... then you are unseating the
pins that sit in the little rubber dampers that are seated in their
little damper wells that are cast into the wheel ...... Anyhow .. I
think I would prefer the hub secure and safely pinned to the wheel in
order to prevent any wheel/hub misalignment opportunity.

You know .. I was just telling Steve ... That I was looking at a bunch
of 170/80/15 ME880s on several Vmaxes over the weekend and I noticed
that most of them had done the "cheap and dirty" offset routine.
Talking to some of the people I got the impression that this method
has been discussed over on the "social" list. At any rate .. the
procedure seems to be pretty safe and effective and it certainly
provides just a little more clearance to fit the 880 and other tires
that sometimes get a little close to the swingarm, (just barely
touching or rubbing when you are busy twisting the swingarm with your
throttle).

What they did was to remove the last washer at the axle stub on the
right hand side of the bike. This washer is then relocated between the
differential and the wheel hub. The result is that the entire assembly
remains the same thickness, the hub is unseated the width of the
washer, (hardly a threat with the enormous contact area there), and
the wheel is moved to the right the width of the washer, (about 2.5mm
I think). If you are a little braver ... put this "thin" washer in
place of the thicker washer on the left side of the assembly under the
axle nut ... and move the thicker washer in between the differential
and the wheel hub. I think this washer is about 6mm thick.

IMHO ... if you need more than that couple of mm ... you might want to
make sure your swingarm is straight or seek a more permanent solution.
