Earlier today, I left the house on the Max for what was supposed to be a 4-day
roadtrip around the northwest (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, maybe a little Oregon).
However, at my first stop of the day, I noticed there was quite a bit of oil
down behind the engine getting onto the pipes, frame, a little on the rear
tire, etc. and the oil fill cap was missing. So much for my big trip - I
turned back around and came back home (there was still plenty of oil in the
crankcase). Once home, I immediately began the task of changing the engine oil
and filter and it was at this time that I found the cap lodged down in the
internals of the bike. How it got there, I'm not sure (I'm thinking it may
have vibrated itself out during the first 70 miles but who knows?). In any
case, like I mentioned there was quite a bit of oil that got onto the pipes and
had left a black residue. I washed it this afternoon with a fairly heavy
concentrated solution of Simple Green and water. Some of the brown stuff came
off, but most of it, along with the heavier black sludge remain. Does anyone
have any good advice on what would get this stuff off without hurting any of
the surrounding parts? I have Cobra pipes on a 1999 Max, if that makes any
difference. Please reply here or email me directly off-list. Thanks in
advance for any good advice.
