Earlier today, I left the house on the Max for what was supposed to be a 4-day 
roadtrip around the northwest (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, maybe a little Oregon). 
 However, at my first stop of the day, I noticed there was quite a bit of oil 
down behind the engine getting onto the pipes, frame, a little on the rear 
tire, etc. and the oil fill cap was missing.  So much for my big trip - I 
turned back around and came back home (there was still plenty of oil in the 
crankcase).  Once home, I immediately began the task of changing the engine oil 
and filter and it was at this time that I found the cap lodged down in the 
internals of the bike.  How it got there, I'm not sure (I'm thinking it may 
have vibrated itself out during the first 70 miles but who knows?).  In any 
case, like I mentioned there was quite a bit of oil that got onto the pipes and 
had left a black residue.  I washed it this afternoon with a fairly heavy 
concentrated solution of Simple Green and water.  Some of the brown stuff came 
off, but most of it, along with the heavier black sludge remain.  Does anyone 
have any good advice on what would get this stuff off without hurting any of 
the surrounding parts?  I have Cobra pipes on a 1999 Max, if that makes any 
difference.  Please reply here or email me directly off-list.  Thanks in
