The whole idea of this mod is that they bolt up to the
max with no additional brackets or hardware. Thus by
default they will have basically the same dimesions
and mounting layout.

The improvement in braking effect comes from the fact
that they are one piece machined billet calipers and
are not made up of two halves bolted together as in
the stock max calipers. No matter how rigid the two
piece calipers appear they will and do flex, however
minutely, and apply uneven pressure across the pads
leading to local hot spots and reductions in braking
performance along with enhanced wear rates.

I found that I can apply huge braking force with two
fingers using the stock max m/cyl and the R1 calipers.
If you use the R1 m/cyl things are even more
effective although I found this set up too harsh with
not enough control over the progression from gentle
application to full on braking effect. I would
suggest that is down to personal preferance as I do
not have any explanation as to why this should be so.

As an aside when I changed mine I had to replace less
fluid than what came out of the stockers. I'm no
expert but maybe this has something to do with the
improvement (volumes etc.). All I know is it works
for me and the difference is unbelievable.

I used DOT4 after flushing the system.

Give them the benefit of doubt and try them out. I
guess you could always return them or sell them on if
you are not happy with the improvement. I would
gamble that you will be pleasantly surprised. Just be
careful until you have the feel of them and don't
forget the R1 pads need time to settle in before
maximum performance is achieved.
