In my experience this is not the cam chain, but a piston pen (small end) wearing out. I have seen many maxes with this problem (30+) which have been into my garage for repair, including my own. Mostly right side.
Mainly it is caused by overrevving the engine (wheelies, burnouts, tyre slip on acceleration and not noticing the gauge): install rev limiter! Also I have found bad/misplaced oil seals in the oil circuit that reduce oil pressure due to internal leaks in the engine. Once even with a new and never serviced vmax, right from the factory...
Anyway, check the rods. Fairly simple to do.

I have a ticking noise between 2500 and 3000 rpm. It sounds like a chain
rattle. You don't have to take the engine out. I'd never go back to that
dealer. If you look closely between the carbs and under, you'll see the one
in the back of the 1-3 cylinder bank. The other one is in back of 2 and 4
under the exhaust shield.
Thanks

Kosy I am curious why you are gonna R&R the tensioner? By that I mean is it
noisy? I have a 2000 that needs it done and the dealer said the motor has to
come out of the bike and split the cases to get at it!
