My 2000 Max also likes drinking oil and quite hefty amounts. I have never bothered to
check, but I must top it up every 3000 miles, when the red light comes on more and
more often on acceleration. I don't worry and have my personal reasons for it since it
is not the first bike or vehicle that does this to me. No smoke at all, no lack of
power, no weird noises, no aluminium deposits on the plugs, no debris in the
filter............NO WORRY. I was a bike mechanic long time ago and you just find that
some models have this stupid tendency, ( a totally different case was when we first
raced a "tuned" 1000 cc CB 750 in a six hour race in Zanvoort, Holland where our
beauty was pumping out more oil than the fuel it was consuming, no kidding! ). I use
100% synthetic oil after using "special" running in oil from the Yamaha dealer for the
first 700 miles. It could be the type of oil or God knows, but as I said no concern
for me, just the aggravation of having to feed it 1/2 a pint now and then.
