Bo,
I assume you mean you put Mikuni 152.5s back in for mains .... thats
fine ... Having a pilot mixture screw out 8 turns is pretty wild ...
perhaps it was vibrating itself to freedom and you guys simply cut the
escape short.

Factory settings on the mixture screws can get pretty wild too ... it
is not unusual to see a range from 1 1/2 to 2 3/4 on some bikes ...
this has been discussed before and we only hope those were set using
the pipe plugs on the factory exhaust and a CO meter ... Your mechanic
... if he doesn't have a CO meter .. or a ColorTune or something like
that ... can always set your mixture screws for maximum RPM then
perhaps back them back in a 1/4 ... many people accomplish the same by
simply listening for the best idle etc ... If you start the engine and
let it idle then you should be able to turn the screw in until you
hear the engine suffering .. if you turn it in until it seats and you
notice no change then you have an obstructed pilot circuit, (take the
screw out and give the vacated hole a good shot of compressed air ..
you might want to do this to every cylinder before you begin anyhow
...).

Otherwise .. set them all for two turns out ... start the engine ..
and then turn each one in until the engine suffers .. then back back
out 1/4 to 1/2 turn. When you are done ... try to hold the engine
between 1500 and 2000 rpm ... and see if you hear any struggling or
popping back through any of the carbs, (if you have to ... pull the
top of the airbox off when you are doing this .. it is easier to
identify who is popping ...). Turn the screw out on any "popping"
cylinders until the popping stops ....... Then go with that and check
you plugs after putting around the block a few times ... touch up
light or dark cylinders 1/4 turn at a time till everyone is starting
to look equal. IMHO as always ...... I assume you guys are going to
pull the slides out and see where the needles are and that they are
all equal etc ...and that they all move freely ... have no holes in
them .. rips, tears etc ......
