in the original RE the character class [\w] is more elaborate.

The RE in my previous message was just a reduction of the original for
debugging purpose and in search of the breaking point (the lock up).
I don't think removing square brackets would cure the problem.
However I will test changes in my RE using your suggestions.
One last note ... the "weburl" RE was developed in PHP where it works with
no errors or slowdown that I know. It was then converted to a Javascript RE.
