It's not unreasonable to presume he/she was/is trolling as the negative posts are their only ones on Google Code. It's probably not their fault they don't understand what they are talking about, some people just don't have the opportunity to get experience at an enterprise level to understand the major role XML plays.

I work in a major international organisation and all systems communicate with SOAP XML, it is very much a corporate standard in many organisations I've dealt with (not saying it should, just that it is). It would be a dream for our front end applications to be able to use E4X to access services. JSON just doesn't fulfil our needs when we have to search and verify attributes in the xml coming back from .NET SOAP services and create a render of the data.

If there was a standard to search JS objects using similar dot and @ notation and that attributes were standardised in some way then conversion to JSON would be fine for working with XML, but unless that happens E4X is easily the best option for dealing with business requirements.
