Comment #31 on issue 90 by [email protected]: V8 doesn't stable sort
http://code.google.com/p/v8/issues/detail?id=90

There's simply no way to make everyone happy and I believe v8 made a good decision about this. The v8 developers aren't ignoring the community: Think of all the software developers that *aren't* complaining, because sort()'s performance doesn't suck. Their opinions count too, right? A decision had to be made it's been made in favor of performance. Again, you can't please everyone. A lot of people are pleased, though. v8 isn't here to scratch everyone's itch.

sort((sort(A)) != sort(A) is not very convenient, I agree, but it's something you'll have to expect when dealing with an unstable sort.

Chrome doesn't look bad if it has unstable sort. After all IE9's and Opera's sort are unstable as well. Software developers that can't code are the ones looking bad.

It's been said already and I'll say it again: Use your own sorting algorithm. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
