Kimm,
A laptop will normally operate off its own battery, the adaptor is only
a battery charger. We can pull the plug on my wife's laptop while it's
running and there's no consequence.
FWIW: I use a UPS on my own computer that has 2 RV/Marine batteries
attached, replacing the 2 smaller 12-volt batteries that were inside the
unit.
