Hi, Wayne .....

The tankless water heaters do have some appeal but they are pretty pricey are they not?  No prices were given on the Precision Temp web site. What is installation like? As I read the specs, the Precision Temp heater is not as wide as the Atwood and Suburban tank heaters. Does that make for installation problems?  I couldn't find the special directions for retrofitting mentioned on the specs web page. Can you point me to those directions?

Also, the ignition and temperature controls seem more complicated than a tank type heater. How is the reliability of the electronics and controls on the Precision Temp unit? Wouldn't want the circuit boards to get zapped by campground power surges. I gather it vents the exhaust gases the same way as the tank heaters vent --i.e., out the access door vents. Is that the way it works?

I do like the idea of endless hot water. No doubt my wife and daughter would like it too. Hmmmm.

Hey Jim,
Try this link to the Precision Temp 500 Tankless water heater. Three other members of the WDCU have these installed in their Trailers. We never run out of hot water!!!
We can drain the freshwater tank, all 30 gallons if we need to (course we don't). Its nice to take that long shower when we have full hookups.

Subject: [VAC] Water Heaters

My '68 Tradewind needs a new water heater. I asked a parts man at a local RV store which heaters seemed to give the best service. He said he preferred the Atwood. He also said that he would suggest the 6 gal size over the 10 gal size because the recovery rate on the larger 10 gal size was slow and I would actually get as much useful hot water out of the smaller unit for that reason. I have never heard that comment. The '68 Tradewind came with a 10 gal tank according to the owner's manual so that's what I was anticipating replacing.

What's the collective wisdom and experience on the 6 gal size vs. the 10 gal size and is there any reason to favor the Atwood over the Suburban models?
