I wouldn't recommend using a unit that that uses the tow vehicle
hydraulics to directly actuate the trailer brakes, but... there are more
and more companies manufacturing control units for trailers which will
actuate the hydraulic trailer brakes with an electric signal from the tow
vehicle (i.e.- a standard brake controller).

I am considering trying one of these to replace the vacuum system
on my VAC Disc brake setup- but saving the disc brakes.
But- a big question is whether you can find parts for the
hydraulic brakes.
FWIW- I'm betting that the next few years see more electrically actuated
hydraulic trailer brakes.
