Having been clued into the existence of Compiz and Beryl, I now
know my enthusiasm was old news to most of you. Embarrassment
aside, I admit I went from Dapper to Hardy with no E-F-G
versions in between and consequently had no idea these features
were in Gutsy.

Some strange behavior persists. If a window is placed near the
bottom edge it may try to dock, then twitch, but ultimately pops
up a notch and is stable.
It was discovered by Paul Flint and myself today that Google
Earth is not compatible with any graphic enhancement and will
flicker annoyingly until visual effects are turned off. YMMV. We
tried two versions of G-E with the same result.

I don't have a mouse wheel (laptop w/ synaptic touchpad) but if
I hold both buttons down with the Alt key, I can see the effect
you describe in Dapper, but in Hardy I just get a blue rectangle
mask indicating the window is being resized. I might have to buy
a mouse or trackball.

I will try this soon. Here's another fun thing: open several
windows and start pressing Flower (Windows key) + Tab; it'll
will knock your socks off (if you are as easily amused as
me...).

I still have a bootable Dapper partition, but this machine has
been unsullied by any Microsoft OS. Full disclosure: I did
install Crossover just in case I need something from Them.
We also discovered a serious bug, which had been confirmed by
Ubuntu, that Switch User is broken in Hardy (as is Logout). A
restart seems to be required to change identities.
I have had another anomaly (twice now) and that is booting Hardy
after shutting down Dapper will sometimes result in what appears
to be a successful login, but if windows are opened, they do not
capture the focus (title bar stays dim) and the controls for
Minimize, Maximize, and Close are missing. Activity can still be
accomplished in the windows, but they cannot be dragged around
and must be shut via the File | Quit menu. (I haven't tried
Ctl-Q.)
Rebooting seems to cure this issue.
I hope this info is useful to someone. Please do not try any of
these suggestions if there is a chance of losing data. Hardy is
not ready for production or prime-time quite yet.
Lastly, thanks Richard Lawrence for the Gnome DO hint. Neat.
