The term for this my software geek brother, is Threads Per Inch (TPI)
but as far as I am aware, from my collection of screws, there are two
primary screw thread densities. It seems like newer drives usually use
the tighter thread density screws, while older hardware uses the wider
thread density screws.
The difference here is even more bizzare. The older, less dense screws
are typically an American standard, #4 shaft with 40 TPI. These are
refered to as 4-40. The more dense are the Metric standard screws, which
have a Metric designation, either DIN or EIAJ.
