Once upon a time, a tethered solution was my primary method of internet 
connection. This on a pretty hacked together Knoppix install; if it worked 
there, it would probably work anywhere.

Of course this was actually on the 1x network. You needed to set it up as an 
external usb modem with the proper string. I could find the user name/password 
via google (they were pretty generic). Also, you had to set the max speed to 
the 1x network, and IIRC, the connection speed had to be set below 49600 baud. 

If I try firing it up on EVDO, it politely tells me I'll be needing to pay an 
additional $60 a month.
