Indeed, Linux is often better at hardware support in some limited instances,
usually when the hardware is considered "obsolete" by proprietary software
vendors and/or hardware manufacturers.

One interesting twist is that I've found that GIMP can often read raw files from
some digital cameras that Photoshop balks at.  Usually, a newer version of
Photoshop would do the trick, but that it is often prohibitively expensive to
upgrade.
