We had fast internet at school - in the dorms and city ... it was ubiquitous. That said, LAN parties were still popular, because it is a form of socializing ... there is something you get out of sharing the experience first person with other folks in the room... whether it is games or programming, actually... the shared experience is what makes the "hacker space" that much better than a fully stocked but lonely personal workspace.
