Ironically, way back when I was using emacs on a Sun box, the ctrl key WAS on the home row and I learned xmodmap to put it on the bottom row. Depending on the keyboard and key pitch, try hitting ctrl with an underhanded thumb instead of pinky. Also try a slightly undersized keyboard. Most importantly, use TWO ctrl keys (one on each side), so that you can use TWO hands to make chords. One hand for the primary key, and one hand for the modifier(s). In my experience, that + touch typing Dvorak will save your hands. -- Anthony Carrico
