I highly recommend lfd - http://www.configserver.com/cp/csf.html.

You can set it up to alert you to logins via email, complete with the IP
address of the user logging in and the user name they are logging in with.
 I've found it invaluable for preventing unauthorized access.  I even
receive alerts for successful logins so I can have an idea of who gets in
when.  It won't stop everything but it's one layer of protection that I've
found works well.

You can use it in conjunction with the firewall to automatically block
people who try to bruteforce their way in.
