I am not up on the lingo, but have dealt with something similar recently. I believe you can revert the boot to USB with a BIOS setting.
A quick search turned up the following, that sounds familiar: "To boot the PC you need to go into the BIOS and enable legacy mode." https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Can-t-b oot-from-USB-or-DVD-HP-Pavilion-g6-2257sr/m-p/2305227#M411916 FWIW Ron Lawrence -----Original Message----- From: Vermont Area Group of Unix Enthusiasts [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of DANIEL CONNELLY Sent: Monday, February 10, 2020 8:49 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Any lurkers left on this list? Lurkers: I still hang here because I can't live without Linux, Docker and (the promise of) Wayland. Its something to keep me occupied in my retirement years. And, I can at least look forward to OpenSUSE Leap 15.2 in May, when the snow melts. This will give me the kernel 5.4 goodness to swing with Radeon GPUs (one of which I may or may not buy, depending on the tariffs and the coronavirus, and all). But here is my current reality: I was recently called upon by perfectly reasonable young woman who works outside of tech to replace the EFI Windows 8 on her HP Pavilion with KUbuntu. Easy-peasy, I thought. Not! Pavilions are surprisingly resistant to legacy boots from a USB stick bringing forth a KUbuntu ISO. Its just not done that way anymore. MS wants to own all boot objects. HP is on their side. Bastards! If I can't turn aside this corrupt firmware, I might need to go with a EFI Linux boot. Ugh! Plus, this is a little intimidating. Have any of you enthusiasts out there had experience doing a Linux EFI installation from a stick. The install from the KUbuntu site is just an ISO. Don't even bother with the Secure Boot crap. One other thing, the Pavilion has a touch screen. KDE Plasma seems like a better bet than GNOME 3 for gestures (if I get that far).
