Resolved now.
The KUbuntu ISO file (the default download) will not boot from a USB stick on
an HP UEFI laptop. The non-obvious step is that the ISO must be extracted onto
a FAT-formatted USB stick first.
That stick will then boot under UEFI firmware on the HP laptop, provided Secure
Boot is turned off in the laptop system configuration.
The simplest way to extract the needed file system from the KUbuntu ISO
download is to use the p7zip application. Yes, there is an "app" for that.
More than one. Skip them. You will only get confused.
