Gregory et al,

In looking at the setup of my windows xp vm, I realized that when I tried to
start it from the command-line, I didn't give it the --type gui option.

I haven't had time to test out the theory that that is the problem today.

I am trying to get a new laptop and a hosted (remote vm) configured with jaws
and neither system is behaving at all well :)

Why can't you get it to come up?

As another blind user, I've run natively on a windows host, and over
vrdp on a gnu/linux host just fine. I do though prefer running a guest
on a host where I'm physically present, since I've found that when
running gnu/linux guests using the microsoft rdp client, it is a bit
sluggish, especially when typing. If I'm for example using speakup with
espeakup/espeak, on a gnu/linux guest over vrdp I can count to 3
between pressing a key, and getting speech feedback from speakup. I've
followed the suggestions in the virtualbox manual on dealing with
sluggish performance when using the microsoft rdp client, but that
still doesn't help.

All you need to know is in the chapter of the virtualbox manual
dealing with vrdp. If you run into specific problems, I'm sure myself
or others would be able to help resolve them.
