Guess you mean VirtualBox and not VMware.  The only surprise to me is 
that it booted successfully under VB.  Windows does not like to see 
radical changes in the hardware - virtual or otherwise.  If it can't be 
fixed by booting to safe mode, then repairing using the Windows 
installation media may help.  In any case, you will most likely have to 
call Microsoft to re-activate Windows if you do get it working again.

Real lesson to be learned: Don't do that.  Water over the proverbial dam 
now.

If you wanted to try booting the Windows installation in VB, then 
cloning it to a virtual disk under Linux without touching the original 
would have been the way to go; however, to remain legal you could 
probably no longer use the original.  IANAL.
