Thank you Kees,

I did indeed try F8 many times, to no avail.
I even resorted to the winxp-sp3 install CD and went into
recovery mode and issued the commands
fixmbr
fixboot

still to no avail.

It still see the very very brief message which I am unable to read and
machine reboots.
