I personally detach all media from the guest, unregister the guest to
make sure virtualbox agrees that I should be able to do so, move the
xml file with the vdi file(s) to the new host, register the guest on
the new host, attach the media, check the guest's settings, and
everything is as it was on the old host. You can't do this between
gnu/linux and windows hosts for example, but linux to linux and
windows to windows should be no problem.

You said you exported the guest from the old host to the new host. I
can think of at least three ways to do that so it's possible you
didn't use the method I described above.
