I think here's where my confusion over your statement came from. The
"HardwareAddress" value returned from "VBoxManage list bridgedifs" is,
without doubt, the MAC address of the host, not the guest. Nothing in
the guest could ever see it.

Nevertheless, your reply sent me in the right direction, for which I
give my thanks. It was the MAC address that the guest was seeing that
changed. This address is in the XML file for the guest. That address was
different in the exported copy of the guest, as you noted in your
followup:

But again, your original reply confused me because of the snippet at the
top of this email was dissonant.
