First things are ... 512M really isn't enough memory for *either* XP or ubuntu 
anymore.  Perhaps 10 yrs ago.  I'm guessing your system has a 2G or 3G max.  So 
upgrade to 4G that way you can actually reach your 3G max.  I don't know if 
it's better to split 50/50, or split 1G/2G.

Second things is ...  VDI is known to be slow, and especially in Windows.  If 
you can dedicate a partition and use rawvmdk, that would probably help.

Also, if you're running an old XP 32bit system, make sure you have enabled 
virtualization features in BIOS.  Back in those days, they mostly didn't exist. 
 In which case, any guest or any virtualization you might hope to do is bound 
to be slow as molasses.  And once again, hopefully you have multiple cores.  
Because without multiple cores, don't expect any whiz-bang super awesome 
solutions.
