I first uninstalled r84104 and installed r84105, and "Help => About VirtualBox..." still shows r84104. Note that I still had the Guest Additions CD attached to another VM and had to release that manually first before trying the installation on my new VM. But the good news is the running VM "Devices => Install Guest Additions..." now works! Thanks so much.
