That's strange, because it should work. Unless firewall rules on the guest and/or host are blocking pings. Just to make sure I understand your question, let me put it the way I understand it. You used ssh port forwarding to forward port 1080 from the guest to port 1080 on the host. You want to use this forwarded port as a proxy for http connections for example. If I understood that correctly, then all you need to do is to setup your browser to use http://localhost:1080 as an http proxy. HTH.
