I was able to load the additions, but they do not self install.
I had to manually mount /dev/sr1 (which contained the iso
file for the additions), cd to the mount point and run the
shell script VBoxLinuxAdditions.run to install the additions.
However, this did not relieve the problems I mention
with respect to the mini drop down menu, the clipboard
and the networking.
