OK, I have found a fix for most of the problem:-

In File->Preferences->Input unset the "Auto Capture Keyboard" tick
    box.

With this unset I can now move vm windows and resize them. The only
remaining problem I have is that my Windows 7 vm has the Resize
options greyed out in the View->Virtual Screen 1 menu and the "Auto
Resize Guest Display" option is greyed out.

Anyone know how I can re-enable these options?
