Think of virtual machines like a removable hard drive. The virtualizer
(Virtualbox) is the ¨virtual pc¨. Your virtual machine the "removable
hard drive" but in a file (vhd).

In other words, what I´m tryign to say is that updating the virtualbox
version should NOT imply any change of configuration in the
virtualized software. It´s just running on an improved version of the
¨pc¨ (virtual environment) you configured when you created the VM.

If you want to be extra safe, just export your VM to an ¨appliance¨
file (OVA) format. It will include not only the contents of the
virtual hard disk (vhd file) but also the settings you used when
creating such VM in virtualbox.

As usual, after updating your virtualbox host, you should also update
the Guest Additions in the VM to match the host version...

Hope this helps!
