The Linux sound systems are becoming ever more complicated rather than
simple.

Back in the days of ALSA (advanced Linux sound architecture) everything
worked.

Very likely. You will have to Google "how to disable Pipewire" followed by
the name and version of your Linux distro. I can't at the moment but I will
research this later this afternoon.
