Emulate two optical units, boot from one, "put" additions in another ?
(sorry if vbox has a limit on the number of optical units, I did not check)

Mounting the iso and then accessing as CD drive in guest works fine ....

BUT what if the guest is being run off an iso such as Dynebolic or Knoppix?
Actually, these boot into a ram disk and one should be able to mount the
other iso, copy, files and then swap back. VirtualBox will seemingly mount
the other iso but it does not really do so.

So how might one get the guest addtions into such a beast. (If it were
possible to mount the vdi used a persistant storage in such "live
CDs" (unionfs is great for this!) and copy the iso or contents, then the
problem would be solved, but ...
