The VDI is a virtual disk image. The files you download from
http://virtualbox.wordpress.com/
are vdi files.

When you create a new VM with Virtualbox, it will create the XML and VDI
files, but during the creation process you can make it use an existing VDI
file (the one you downloaded from the above site).
