Exactly. And everybody (including me and the manual ;-) told you that the easy way to do this is via the menu entry "Install Guest Additions" in the "Devices" menu of your (running) virtual machine.
But if you really insist to do this more manually, the correct procedure is described in chapter 4.2.1.1 "Mounting the Additions ISO file" of the VirtualBox UserManual (exact chapter number is from the latest version 3.0.4, may be different in other versions).
