Hello, Frank --
I used "top" to ensure that kpackagekit (and manager) are NOT running.  
I carefully entered the command "sudo dpkg --configure --pending" and 
tapped <Enter>. Unfortunately, there is NO output -- I simply get 
another prompt.  I'm afraid it is difficult for me to be any too helpful 
to you!  Is there anything else I can try?
